What Happens If My Shears Or Clipper Blades Get Rusty?

Rust will cause your shears and clipper blades to jam and not cut properly.

First, we need to understand that stainless steel doesn’t make it rust-proof. It’s just more resistant to oxidation so that means there is less chance of it becoming rusty.

What makes stainless steel corrosive-resistant?

What makes stainless steel corrosive-resistant is that there’s a thin layer of chromium oxide on the steel's surface, known as a passive layer. This chromium 'passive layer' protects the steel from common forms of corrosion.

That’s why when your shears and clipper blades are exposed to acidic chemicals, saline solution, grease, moisture, or heat for extended periods of time, the “passive layer” is slowly removed from the steel, allowing oxygen to react with the surface - causing it to rust.

What do I do when that happens?

When your blades rust, it would be really good to lubricate your blades regularly.

WD40 can remove rust builds up on the surface of your blades most of the time. Sometimes you need to bring them to your sharpener to get a fresh new cutting edge.

Owners often overlooked rusts on their blades because they seem harmless. But once they spread throughout the surface of your blades, or worse, get inside and start to deteriorate your tool. It’s just a matter of time before it renders your blades unusable.

To prevent this, don’t forget to oil your blades regularly. Keep away your shears and clipper blades away from chemicals, excessive heat, or saline solutions.

And most importantly keep your tools away from moisture, moisture is the blade killer, store your blades and shears  somewhere that moisture is less likely to reach them i.e. a drawer, cardboard blade box, wrapped in a towel, stored with those little absorption packs  you can get on amazon.

If you have any more concerns about taking care of your blades, ask your sharpener. They know what to do.

Hope this helps!
